LGBTQ+ Liberation Heroes Portrait Series
Harvey Milk was a visionary civil and human rights activist who in 1977, became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the US. Milk’s unrelenting and unapologetic activism for the LGBTQ+ community, both before and during his time in office, provided the community with hope and visibility during a time in which hostility and discrimination were rampant. His remarkable career was tragically cut short when he was assassinated a year after taking office. Today Milk is remembered as a martyr and icon for the LGBTQ+ community.
