LGBTQ+ activists Edith Windsor and her wife Thea Spyer were together for nearly half a century. When Spyer died in 2009 however, the federal government did not recognise their marriage and Windsor was ordered to pay more the $350,00 int estate taxes. Windsor filed a lawsuit leading to the 2013 Supreme Court of the US case ‘Us v. Windsor’, which overturned Section 3 of the Defence of Marriage Act and was considered a landmark legal victory for the same-sex marriage movement in the US.
