Bayard Rustin was a civil and gay rights activist who worked as an advisor to Martin Luther King and was a key organiser of the 1963 March on Washington . Rustin was openly gay at a time when homosexuality was criminalised and was therefore kept in the background of the movement. In 2013 however, Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama who said - ‘This great leader, often at Dr King’s side, was denied his rightful place in history because he was openly gay.
