LGBTQ+ Liberation Heroes Portrait Series
Barbara Gittings is regarded by many in the community to be the Mother of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Gittings began her activism in the 1950’s, a decade before the pivotal Stonewall Uprising of 1969. She organised the New York Chapter of the lesbian group ‘The Daughter’s of Bilitis’ and edited their magazine ‘The Ladder’. She was also instrumental in the fight to get the American Psychiatric Association to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness.
